Super Sweet Peas

Sweet Peas .. again with the "who can resist them" question ? .. I know .. some vines can be a nuisance (hubby still has a grudge against morning glory .. I'm still working on him !) .. I grew annuals for the scent, which was wonderful ! .. but I was disappointed in how much foliage took over .. it might have been the type I chose .. Now a days there are so many to choose from it is like candy ? haha .. Ok .. sweet is mentioned here so how the heck can I help myself ?? ..

This year .. because I have another mix that is being potted (that great red and white, cool thing) .. I picked up "Everlasting Pea" .. (people with kids and pets shudder hearing that term) .. moving on .. This is one a perennial and I want to find just the right spot so I don't consider it a weed and haul the poor thing out when it is just trying to do its job for heaven sake !

I'm still having a great time with this reference site .. look at how many cultivars there are here ! WOW !

Hi again nancy
I was just going to say they have different cultivars that withstand the heat and our humidty better. Now I have to go have a look to check up on that !

Every summer I drive past 'wild' spots filled with sweet peas and make a mental note I want to add them somewhere in the gardens. I must have a leak somewhere. Each year I make the same stops to check them out and file another note.

I might have better luck this year - I just got a reminder. I also flashed back to this:

Apios americana - Groundnut

I was happy just getting a photo but every time I see it I regret not getting it together to actually try growing some.

I have just planted a pot of sweet pea seeds in my normally 'veggies only' greenhouse. I just can't resist the wonderful perfume.

I'm trying my first sweet peas this year. In a container of course because I have a balcony garden. I'm not sure if mine will make it since the heat here is killer. I didn't even bother to look for a heat tolerant kind I just went for the dwarf bijou mix. I hope yours work out I can't wait to smell mine.

Wiseacre helloooo !
I'm still laughing at your memory problem because I am the same way .. I could lie and say I write everything down, but then I would have to confess about NOT knowing where those papers are .. JEEZ !
Thanks for the link .. that is one dramatic dark colour !
Hi matron
YES ! you must have some scent pleasure with your veg too! It is one of a kind and I love it as well .. pansies do the same thing for me .. just a delicious smell !
Hi vanillalotus
I know you are restricted to space with the balcony .. it is hard to deny yourself plants when you just don't have the room .. If I can remember I'll send you the link to the heat tolerant ones .. I'm surprised how many types there are now !

PS ... this is my third time typing this and LOOSING IT !!

I can't resist them either - I have them growing up an arch on my allotment and love picking bunch after bunch in the summer as the final task in my harvesting.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my blog. It's always good to see a new face :)

ahhh sweet peas. someone told me just yesterday we can grow them here in Florida. I am having a hard time believing it- just too hot. Maybe I'll give it a try though- just to see.

Isn't that Swallowtail Seed place a hoot. I can linger there for hours. Maybe worse than my blogging. I also like Botanical Seeds. They have pretty seed packets.

It gets so hot so early here that my sweet peas have a really short life and thus cannot turn into weeds. They smell so go they are totally worth it.

ah, yes.. sweetpeas!

I haven't grown them the last 2 years, and I missed them SO much!

Have seed collected from previous years to use, so trying (!) not to buy any more this year.. but if I did, it would be the lovely dark purple and red ones (it has them listed as MATUCANA on your link - I didn't know the name before, so thanks for this)

Hello,

I missed stopping by lately, but wanted to say hello.

I bought a sweet pea a few years ago, have no idea which one but it keeps showing up in the oddest places...very prolific. It didn't have the sweet fragrance that I remember sweet peas had and should have.

Hi marie
I think there must be sweet peas all across the world ? LOL .. ok not the two poles .. but it seems to be a well loved flower !

Hi hedgewitch .. I was so surprised to see so many types of sweet pea .. it is amazing ! Glad you found the type you like !

Hi Gail
I have been out shopping .. very naughty ... eating those awful Cadburys Easter eggs .. you know how it is when you need a chocolate fix ? LOL
That must be the perennial sweet pea you have .. I have a feeling scent was sacrificed for being a perennial. Too bad .. but it is nice to see the vine with flowers !

You know, I have never tried Sweet Peas. But I will never forget a show I watched years ago. It was Martha Stewart, showing the many Sweet Peas in her garden, and I remember being enchanted. I will have to look into this beautiful plant! This post reminded me.
