Summer Wine Ninebark and More !

I know .. this doesn't look like much of an interesting shrub right now. It is just beginning to leaf out. I had an overpowering all out LOVE affair with Ninebark last year. My obsession was "Coppertina" .. I read about it in the previous year (some what like my sambucus obsession .. Black Beauty .. Black Lace .. Sutherland Gold .. ) I was in love with Coppertina and could NOT find it here for ages .. so .. Summer Wine was my object of passion that came late in the year with a huge WOW over the handsome dark purple colour the foliage took .. it was GORGEOUS ! .. then by chance last Spring I did find Centerglow Ninebark and remembered some one saying it was the object of their desire .. how easily influenced am I ? .. Done deal ! took that baby home and planted it in the front garden ... then after all that loving had gone on .. what do I find ? Coppertina finally .. plunk .. in my plantmobile and home to the front garden once more ..
Thank goodness I was able to find this years obsession so quickly .. Pinky Winky hydrangea .. heaven knows how many different hydrangea I would have come home with if I didn't find that lovely this fast ? ... hubby breaths a huge sigh of relief on that one !!

Hello Joy, great selections! Pinky Winky is on my wish list, too. I just got Endless Summer a few weeks ago and planted it in a pot hoping it will do well there. Andrea

Hi Andrea .. no one could be more shocked than I was when I saw PW at Canadian Tire .. talk about hit and run ! .. I almost got Endless Summer because I didn't think I would find PW this year here .. hum ... still thinking about it ! LOL

Hi Joy, you have good taste in your desired shrubs. I got Summer Wine last fall and it is just starting to bloom now. The leaves are the most beautiful blackish red and the flowers are pink in bud opening to white. I can vouch for it. Good luck with Pinky Winky.

Joy, you are so funny. I think your obsession may lead you to a psychologist's couch if you're not careful. The only thing that can save you is to buy more plants. Go ahead and save your sanity. You have my permission.

Joy,

Thanks for the links. They are all gorgeous shrubs and I want them in my garden, yesterday! Do you grow them in full sun, I worry that in my shadier space they might revert to green. I read that on the gardenweb, don't know if it's true!

Beautiful shrubs, I am looking forward to photos this spring and summer.

Joy, it looks lovely. I love the look of shrubs as they are starting to leaf out. They look so delicate and even kind of lacy to me. The ninebark's a beauty!

We have them at the nursery where I work. So far I'm exercising restraint. . .

Thank goodness!! I thought I was going to have to give you CPR. Did you say you got it at a Tire Shop? I left so many of our favorite PW's behind at my last house. You just listed quite a few of them in your post. We seem to think alike. I had just found Black Lace and it was doing nicely in a dappled light location. It's almost too hot to grow it here. They call it the Japenese Maple of the North.

I can't wait to hear what you say when your Pinky Winky blooms!

Gail at Clay and Limestone has promised you and I for lots of wow at Halloween/Fall. She says she puts on the show at her house. Just for the fun of it...yesterday, I googled on images..pumpkins and spent quite some time looking at pretty pics. What an obession I have with that stuff. At least you understand!

Anna .. the store is called "Canadian Tire" it is a store that started with automotive things then quickly expanded to almost the same things as Home Depot .. they have great garden centers.I split my time to this one, RONA (Canadian store) Home Depot, Wal-Mart and some private nurseries .. well rounded adventures !
Yes .. I heard it was the "poor man's Japanese Maple" too !
I totally understand Halloween obsessions .. absolutely my favorite time of year !
Can't wait to see what Gail and you do !!

garden girl .. you and I both know you are going to get at least one of them ! You have to !!!! haha

Hi Gail .. most of them have shade (light) with sun and no problems with colour consistancy so far .. I know some of them can be tricky .. but the Ninebark seem fairly stable. You have to have some too ! : )

Jane Marie .. I think that is the only on going treatment for my problem .. more plants !! but it always helps when some one else says "you have my permission"?
I can say you made me do it for my own good ? LOL

frances .. it is a remarkable colour in the Autumn for us here. I bought it out of desperation and was so happy to se that intense colouring .. more than worth the trouble of going through plant withdrawal ? LOL
Can't wait to see Pinky Winky do its thing ! Thanks : )

Ninebarks!!! Yes, yes, yes!!!! The most fantastic "new" shrubs I can recall in decades. Hot, hot, hot!!!! I love hydrangeas, too, but they don't love me. (Sob.) However, I think 'Endless Summer' is actually coming back! So I'll probably break down and add a few more again this year, hoping against hope that they'll finally warm up to me...

"ben" .. I love them .. I didn't expect such wonderful colour .. you read about it, but then you aren't really prepared ? LOL
Do you have Sambucus ? .. I really love Sutherland Gold with the cutleaf affect. I wonder why you have a had time with hydrangea ? .. I started with Little Lamb and it grabbed a hold of me ! Hoping Pinky Winky will live up to all the praise it is written about !

I recently had to drive 1 hour to fins my Sutherland Gold! And now it's taking it's time leafing out. Grrrrrr. My coppertina is certainly copper in its first spring, but I hear they don't stay that way, alas. Cool plants, for sure.

Hi Benjamin .. I just left a note on your blog about the clematis issue. I do love my shrubs ... even if they can get a bit cranky with their colour ? at times .. haha .. Yours will settle down once they feel at home ?
The colours can be awesome !

Joy, in March I cut branches from my 'Diablo' ninebark to use as pea poles. Every one of those branches has leafed out and started growing!

My friend has coppertina and I'm going to ask for a branch from her to see if it does the same. I also have a chartreuse ninebark out front, forgot the name and it's too wet and chilly to run out there in my pj's.

melanie .. I was out in the rain this morning taking some pictures (in a housecoat at least ? sigh ).. they don't really show all of the work I did yesterday (in light rain which is wonderful !) .. YES ! I do have a thing for Ninebark .. and that is a fun thing for the branches to leaf out .. you must have some spots to plant those babies right ?!!
