Log Fern Hoopla !

I know .. how boring a post can this be ? .. Well this is my baby. The first fern I ever bought for my garden. It is a "Log Fern" .. a native which should be numerous in it's habitat but for some quirky reason is not and is deemed "special". Indeed it is special because believe it or not I have waited over 6 years for it to get this big and healthy looking. I was sure many times that it didn't like my garden or me to boot .. that it was slowly going to fade into the ground and run away from its new home. To the left of it is another "character" Canada Lily .. another VERY slow grower and requires loads of patience but it has an amazing if not delicate tiny flower .. So called "native" plants can some times need very patient gardeners .. but hey .. I'm not going any where so I will put in the effort .. as long as I can have a party in other areas of the garden and shake things up a little. meanwhile back at the "Old Folks Home ......." crickets chirping in the background sound affects ... zzzzz !

I love ferns so don't think that your post is boring at all and I salute your patience - we gardeners need a lot of that!

Hi Shirley .. thank you ! .. I didn't expect this guy to take such a long time .. but he/she is gorgeous now and I adore him/her ?
Hope the Canada Lily hurries up a little now ? haha

Megan .. you must have had a fern thing as a kid ? I know I did .. I was lucky for a while when I was younger living near some beautiful woods .. I'll remember that forever : )

Odd how you sometimes get hooked on a plant that doesn't really seem to be particularly exciting... I feel the same about my wild asparagus. I sat and looked at it apparently doing nothing for about four years, and then it sudenly exploded. It now dominates everything and I really should get rid of it, but ...

The intricate detail of fern foliage is lovely. I like the patterns they make. Your log fern is good looking, with its classically shaped fronds. Some ferns do seem to grow so slowly, and make me wish that I had planted them earlier. It's hard not to give their surrounding space, that I'm saving for them, over to another plant.

East Texas is the first locale where I've lived where ferns come up like weeds. I love their texture. They're never boring to me.

Brenda .. I never thought of Texas as fern friendly ? .. i always thought it was so hot and dry there , ferns had no chance .. I have learned something today ! : )

Hi NorthernShade .. I think I know what you mean about the space thing .. I have crowded plants and winced over that a few times. Yes ! I think ferns have beautiful patterns .. they make lovely pictures close up with their designs.

Sue .. it doesn't sound like you are ready to give that asparagus up yet .. we were amazed to see how the Europeans grew it .. Belgium has it down to an absolutely science and that time of year means all sorts of recipes at the cafes.

Joy, It is a lovely fern...I would want it in my garden and would wait patiently, too!

Hi Gail .. I was such a novice gardener when I went to this great local nusery .. I still missed out on the
Jack-in-the-pulpit" to this day yet .. darn ! .. but planting this fern and watching it take this time to really shine .. it makes me happy .. I'm glad I had and still have some patience ? LOL
Thanks for stopping by !

Go native! They are worth the time and effort we invest, and your log fern is no exception. The last time I saw a Canada Lily was in a rocky meadow, bordering woodlands where I used to hike. Unforgettable blooms! ~ Deb

Hi Deb .. You would think being "native" they would grow a little faster but nope .. however a BIG YES ! to having them .. the Cnada Lily is an exceptional bloom even if it is only a single one so far .. great to be Canadian EH !
