Grassy Rattles

You can almost feel the 'cold" in this picture. There are little frost designs on the leaves of the Baptisia .. The Hamlin grass is a dusty tan colour, yet with a few dark green blades coexisting ? with the majority. This is not the final wipe out frost .. just the 'dipping of the toe" type of shocker.
I'm not sure what got into my False Blue Indigo this year but I am liking it a lot ! .. it has become so large and lush ... and loaded with lots of the black seed pod rattles .. I guess it has finally matured ? ... unlike me ? : )

I keep saying I'm going to plant some Indigo but never do. I like the bushy look and the seed pods.

We've had our first frosts - today snow is possible. I'm taking the day off and building a fire.

My False Blue Indigo didn't make it. I'm going to try again next year. We've had no frost yet, but I'm sure it right around the corner. I could hear the crunch from your post.~~Dee

Joy, My baptisia also grew this year and produced the beautiful black rattles. I love this plant...my only gripe, it leaves a huge void in the foundation where I have it planted! My mistake!

Joy, things look so nice yet in your garden. I love the whimsy of your countdown to Halloween. Here's a cute foil however: I see it's sponsored by "buycostumes.com" and I've been promoting in my weekly environment column all this month ways of not buying costumes but instead using creativity and making something out of old clothes, cardboard, and such :)

Back to your garden ... Your grasses and seedheads really look nice too. Is that a clematis that has turned all burgundy against your fence? Very striking!

No frost here yet Joy, but tonight might just be the night...

I would think that the cold weather in Canada would be perfect for hermits. Always have an excuse not to go places!

Hey Brenda .. we are on a "hermit" kick .. we should list the "101 ways to be a hermit" countdown ? LOL .. and yes .. we often say it is just too cold to go out in winter .. but then .. sometimes I say that about summer too ! haha

VP .. the frost man is going to catch up with you guys some time soon girl ! either "him" or Dr. Who ? haha

Tina .. hang in there for the rattle pods .. it took mine a few years to really develope them too and it is well worth it !

Hi Diane.. I think that is great promoting what materials you already have to create a costume with .. I realy don't like those "perfect" manufactured ones .. we had more fun as kids putting ourselves together with bits and pieces and a load of imagination : )
That burgundy foliage is from one of my Purpleleaf Sandcherry shrubs .. they are awesome ! cute little pink flowers in Spring .. berries in the Fall, and the colour is really striking all year .. you have to have one girl !

Gail .. it leaves a void ? .. do you mean when it dies back during winter ? but you gotta' love those rattles .. right ? .. it is all about the rattles !! LOL

Hi Dee .. my crunch is heard world wide !! LOL ... try again with the Baptisia .. it really is a gorgeous plant once it takes hold .. and there are so many different cultivars now to choose from !

Dear Mr. WiseA** .. A fire is a good idea for today .. they threatened us with wet snow, but none so far ? .. will you let me come by and toast some marshmallows ? .. I have been yearning for a good burnt one for ages .. we have an enclosed gas fireplace so no go with toasting there ... BIG sigh !

Those are some beautiful berries on your False Indigo, another season of interest. Plants like that give alot of bang for their buck. :)

That is a major factor to choosing some plants PG .. I had to wait it out a few years with this one but WOW ! .. it did me proud finally .. a beauty : )

Aren't the seed pods of baptisia great? I love them! Mine finally bloomed in true profusion this year. I started it from seed maybe five years ago and it's finally come into its own.

I love all these frost photos, Joy; everything looks mysterious and yet beautiful. And those are some amazing pictures of the moon!
Still no frost here, but I know it's only a matter of time.

Hi Rose .. yes, your turn for frost will be soon girl ! .. it is so amazing to see the moon like that on special mornings .. I'm glad to catch it : )

Hi there garden faerie .. wow ! starting baptisia from seed like that takes a good deal of patience .. you did GREAT ! to wait for it all this time.
They are pretty spectacular when they are mature : )

Starting to look chilly up your way - starting to feel seriously chilly, down here, north of Boston. Haven't had a killing frost, but that may change tonight. Love those Baptisia rattles... mine have been rattling for about fifteen years, now. Like your little 'Hamlin' Miscanthus. Have you tried 'Little Bunny' as well? ...Deb

Deb ... it is COOL here alright .. had the fireplace on a few times .. big fluffy PINK housecoat floating around me .. but we are supposed to have a few more days of "not too bad" ? weather ..
I did have "Little Bunny" some where .. but it must have hopped out of the garden ? Hamlin is trying to fill both spots for me now .. haha .. I need to dig up MORE lawn !!
