Green and Brown .. Before and Now

This was in August last year .. nice and full and so alive : )

This was just after a rain last June .. my green oasis not even at its full potential but gorgeous in my eyes : )

This was yesterday .. totally scary .. totally dead looking .. totally brown with variations in beige ? .. How green was my valley ?

Today we have had buckets of rain with thunder claps via the Viking god and his hammer .. the rain is wonderful even if the back garden looks like hell with the state that it is in .. but rain always reminds me of the green potential factor .. so I am happy even if I have a scary back yard ?... 215 days till HALLOWEEN !!!!

We are in the same boat with our gardens looking about the same. That is why I hate winter so much. A few things are starting to sprout, but not enough to give us that lush look we are longing for... But my sprouts inside under the lights are keeping me in an up mood. Just knowing that just around the corner we will see those beautiful gardens soon... But for now we can keep posting pictures of gardens past...

Yikes! That's exactly how my deck looks like now. With pots turned over, and the only dominant color is brown! The gray sky today is not helping either

What a comparison! You do pay a price for all the summer green, but I think it's worth putting up with the winter browns, knowing what will be coming. Our season changes are far less dramatic, but then, we don't have all that verdant, lush look of your summer garden, which by the way, is beautiful.

Right now, Joy, brown look a lot better than white. Brown gives the promise that eventually there will be new growth. With lots of rain, and a little warmth, you will be on your way to another lush green season. Perhaps if you look under a few leaves, there might even be tiny green buds. I'm still looking out at a white blanket. I was out yesterday walking around the yard, and I was up to my knees in snow in some places, but I rejoiced when I saw a little patch of damp earth. Hurray, there's a garden under there.

Hi Lynn .. I just stopped by your blog and those cookies look delicious girl ! yes .. keeping our garden spirits up with the hopes for good weather SOON .. and comparing last year's pictures .. it helps : )

Hi Louise .. I left my tip about the coffee grounds as an acidic fertilizer .. good tips there on yours girl ! .. we have a very wet gray sky today .. but it is all good .. defrosting the earth and gardens !

Hi Aiyana .. Thank you ! .. we do pay that price for amazing growth in the summer .. and we have very hot humid weather here by Lake Ontario, so it can be a true green house affect at times .. another beautiful albeit short season is Autumn .. my favorite : ) LOL

Oh my gosh NS ! you are in a rut with so much snow still .. that is hard to take .. we may still have some snow flurries here .. but yes ! there are green bits about every where so that is getting me through this phase finally .. hope you get through yours more quickly too girl !

What a contrast. Oh well, soon. Is that Joe Pye flowers you have in your beds with the coneflowers. It is so tall.

With a green thumb and a great design mojo you have- it will be ship shape before you know it :)- I'll be watching (and learning!)

Hi HHG .. Yup ! That is one of the older cultivars of Joe Pye .. and yup or should I say YIKES ? .. he is a tall guy (I did it to block off my view of the neighbors behind me .. I would love a total green wall 10 feet tall girl ! haha

Hi Racquel .. we have had loads of rain in the last 30 hours so it is really helping .. temps are coming up slowly but surely too : )

Hi Tessa .. it is all still a huge learning process for me girl .. a lot of the drive for the back is privacy issues and light issues and the love of the plants issues ? LOL Thanks !

I absolutely love your yard, so beautiful. I like the grass pathways; I never even thought of grass as a pathway material. Makes me rethink some of my design plans.

Nola .. you are so sweet, thank you girl ! .. funny enough I am going to pick the grass up there eventually and maybe put pea gravel down with some flagstone or slate stepping stones .. I keep changing things around .. mostly to be more water wise, less needy ? LOL

Not only are these photos good for comparison, they're also useful for reminding forgetful gardeners (such as myself) where things are & how much room they take up so that newly purchased things don't get planted where they will be swamped by plants that have yet to break dormancy.

Hello there MMD .. I'm glad of the company from other gardeners that are forgetful like I am too .. I have done that .. poor little dormant plant trying to make its way in the world and here I am squeezing a sibling too close to it ? LOL .. we learn from our mistakes, most of the time ?
