The Passion Flower Experiment !

I have been driven by Kathleen of Kasey's Korner to find the "Maypop" passion flower vine aka "Passiflora Incarnata" since she spoke about her passion flower vine order. This was not at all for my benefit .. it was for DH (dear hubby) who really likes these vines .. that whole long story about how we had a gorgeous one when we lived in Holland .. and the vine just below this commentary was a substitute to feel that void during last summer .. and I was pleasantly surprised how well this one did do .. but ...
..... the quest to find one that had a chance of being hardy in our zone, that was the clincher ? .. so after reading Kathleen's post I went looking once again and came upon this one at a regular haunt of mine "Veseys Seeds" in P.E.I. which is Prince Edward Island in our maritime provinces for those who don't know our geography here in the Great White North (rather all beige and brown now) .. in any case .. the bottom picture is the version of the "Maypop" passion flower that I have ordered .. along with .. OK .. Rose, you are going to find out I broke our pact with the "no buying seeds this year promise" .. Rose .. I couldn't help myself .. looking at Veseys SEEDS .. well .. it happened .. I bought some really cute mini sunflower seeds and my favorite Cosmos (Sonata) .. so I confess .. I broke the pact.

This one looks more exotic than the annual one I had last summer ! .. Fingers crossed the great experiment works .. I won't know until next Spring if it has .. but that is what gardening is all about .. we HOPE for the future and learn from the past (almost always that is) .. in the mean time we plan, and plan, and then follow through, as much as we can !!

There is no flower that looks so exotic and lacy-edged than the passion flower. I need to find one myself.

Hi Joey .. all digits accounted for and crossed girl !!

Cindee .. I wonder if it is the variety that you have tried maybe ? I really wonder if I can get the "" one to work for me !

Brenda .. your zone is higher than mine so I am sure you should be able to find one that will work for you !

Our passion flowers haven't gotten going yet this year, Puppy wants to rip them out as they are ornamental and we could be growing tomatoes where they sit instead. I have to say I was disappointed in the lack of passion fruit, but I still loved the flowers.

I have often thought of trying one.... but if it has anything to do with germinating seeds..... like you once confessed, seeds and I don't mix. Sorta like me and annuals, and now I am in the midst of planting up 1000 freakin annual baskets at work..... and no wine or beer fridge on the premises... go figure!

Will we ever get it right?

Cat.. we fell in love with these vines in Holland .. and it is only know that I have stumbled on a possibility there is this one that will survive my growing zone .. I'm a happy gardener to just try it out to see ! : )

Teza .. This is a plant, from Vesey Seeds .. I just discovered it this year (they may have had it other years but I didn't see it) .. so NO seeds for me .. other than a few mini sunflowers and Sonota Cosmos .. No wine or beer fridge with dealing out those annuals ?? Good Grief !! now that is torture ! hahaha

Patsi .. I don't think we will ever be satisfied .. that is what makes us GOOD gardeners really though .. right ? : )

Hi Kathleen ! Vesey says it may be a zone 6 .. I'm zone 5b a little lower but I have grown zone 6-7 plants with success before .. extra mulching and care to establish the first and second years .. this is going to be a fun experiment girl ! Dual comparisons : )

Hi Racquel .. Thanks girl ! Hope it works out .. hey that post for Bloom Day is really nice .. great new photo program : )

I'm trying to grow passion flowers this year too. But I've started the seeds in a big pot in the kitchen so that I can overwinter it next year. No sign of life yet, but I'll keep my blog posted! It's not Maypop, just an ordinary blue passion flower from seeds found at a big box store. Bloomin' branches made into Easter trees sound beautiful!

Gorgeous, these passion flowers. The Maypop looks beautiful ~ I saw many of these on Flickr last summer and thought how wonderful it would be to have these growing here.

Hey Robin ! .. we should all start a "passion flower vine club" ? see how things progress in each garden ? .. yes ! forcing branches (which we actually planted in our tiny garden there and it grow to a shrub .. it was amazing : )

Hello there Kate ! .. I'm getting the vine as a young plant from Veseys Seeds .. and it is a bit tricky since it is classed up in zone 6 .. but I have grown a few from that zone and I'm hoping I'll be able to do it with this one : )
