Chain reaction .....

Well .. this whole post started by way of my daughter-in-law sending an early birthday present(s) back with son .. you get to see what it is at the end of the post .. don't cheat and scroll down yet ! .. I can see YOU !!
I love old horror movies .. I mean the real deal vintage ones .. not that blood and gore crap that people actually pay money to see .. I just can't understand that .. what is wrong with people who want to see all those bloody slash movies .. it leaves NOTHING to the imagination what so ever .. you might as well be taking a biology course .. at least you would come out with some kind of academic credit ?
Take Bela Lugosi .. he knew he laid it on thick but everyone expected him to do just that .. and he didn't take any of it for granted .. one of his quotes "I have never met a vampire personally, but I don't know what might happen tomorrow. "
Now how cool is that ?
Boris Karloff ... what a Frankenstein monster he made ... totally perfect .. even adorable !
He was quoted as saying "The monster was the best friend I ever had." .. now how can you beat that ?
Unless it is with the happy couple ? .. I so totally loved " The Bride of Frankenstein " .. 1935 version .. how about that hair ? and what about that said question "friend?"
Vincent Price ... and Peter Lore .. Vincent read the eulogy at Peter's funeral .. they were true pals .. and loved to laugh .. did you know that Jack Nicholson played with him in the "Raven" another classic .. so many movies .. so little time and space ...
OK .. now to one of my all time favorites finally ... with a Canadian actor you might not recognize .. Raymond Massey right there .. feeling his face .. but there is a reason for that if you haven't seen this PERFECT Halloween movie .. black comedy classic ..
Arsenic and Old Lace
Cary Grant ... Peter Lorre along with him ... well .. the mix of characters with this all taking place on one specific night ??
You have to see this movie .. it doesn't gush guts and gore .. it is just plain slapstick classic FUN on a Halloween night ...
Don't worry .. Carry gets out of his bind ... and marries the girl after all .. and his aunts are well taken care of .. those silly old girls .. killing off gentlemen callers ... thinking that was what was best for those lonely souls ...
Can you see the lit pumpkin down there ??
So .. how did this all kick off .. well because some one was just too thoughtful and sent me the cutest Halloween plaques to hang up in my office ... once I get one ... next year ?
They are cloth with stitching with renditions of vintage Halloween cards .. ones I collect off the net in fact so how is that for a happy coincidence ?? !!
See ... Halloween atmosphere just made me do this !
If you really want to enjoy true Halloween spirit .. dump the gore ... and watch some classic movies and let your imagination take the lead .. just enjoy the fun of it all !

OMG Joy, you are too much! When I was young I used to watch Friday Night Frights with all of the Bela Lugosi movies and anything freaky, like the vampires arising out of the coffins - yikes!

One of my favorites was Vincent Price's "The Fly," - not vampires but so scary.

Joy, this post is so much fun. Those old horror movies are a gem! I'm not a fan at all of the slasher type films around these days. What the heck is the appeal? I prefer the type that play with your mind and leave you freaked out for days! When I was a kid, we used to watch the Twilight Zone and Night Gallery and even the Alfred Hithcock stuff. Remember all that? They used to scare me to death. Now, George and I watch these things and chuckle at how corny they can be at times. Isn't it terrible how desensitized we've become to these things?

I love your daughter-in-law's gift! (Is it weird saying you have a daughter-in-law?) Her gifts are so YOU! She is obviously a very thoughtful woman. Your 'office' is going to look terrific!

Martha girl how true is that ! Twilight Zone and the Night Gallery they scared the bajeepers out of me ! .. YES ! desensitized is so true .. kids aren't kids any more .. it is sad .. but I still love these movies and can't wait to keep playing them as Halloween gets close : ) YES *BIG GRIN* Linda was so sweet .. Ian pulled them out of his luggage and I was blown away by them .. we are lucky in-laws for sure ! .. it is funny to say that , you are RIGHT !

Skeeter .. you crazy woman .. have you been in the apple cider AGAIN ?
And YES !! You have to see this movie .. it is too cute .. I could watch it over and over and over again .. while I am snoring too !
Perfect Halloween mood enhancer for sure ... how is your broom doing this season by the way ?? hehehe

I have seen every one of those movies, and I agree with you about the new ones.

By the way, of course I know who Raymond Massey is! I remember him most from Dr. Kildare.

well i can't tell you how tickled i am that you made a blog post all about those cute pictures! it honestly was just pure luck that i came across them! it was just a huge "a-ha" moment!! then your son and i saw one of the images on your blog (weeks after i bought the framed pictures) of the little girl and the pumpkin and we were both just in awe of the coincidence!!

Of course now I worry that I've set the bar too high for myself! ha ha ha but i'm glad he remembered to give them to you early... I wanted you to have them as long into the season as you could. :)

Oh and I think you and my dad would be able to chat for a long time... he's a big fan of the old bela lugosi movies and old B&W scary movies (I love arsenic and old lace!)

Yes !! I have to seriously start decorating my "office" with orange lights too .. that glow keeps me in a happy comfort zone like you wouldn't believe : )
OMG ! your dad loves those too ! Wow! I would love to hear what he thinks of them all .. have a 24 hour scary B&W movie night ;-)

I am with you, Joy--I have no desire to see those slasher movies that come out today. But give me the old classics anytime! "Arsenic and Old Lace" is one of my favorites; of course, anything with Cary Grant in it is worth watching multiple times:)

CanadianGardenJoy said...

Rose girl how true is that ? there is no story line in the slasher movies .. it is all blood and gore .. but classics made you think a lot didn't they .. and could scare the pants off us as kids .. and YES ! Cary Grant .. Jimmy Stewart (there is one with him in it, can't remember the name but it was a comedy with a family that was totally nutty) in any case .. I could watch this one a hundred times and never get sick f it : )
