Literal "Candy" coated shrubs for WOW factor !

This is "Lemon Candy" aka Physocarpus Opulifolius Lemon Candy aka one heck of a glowing yellow to chartreuse ninebark .. the proper name is a link if you want to read up on it .. but in short .. they are in short perfect plants for us GWN gardeners -40C to the heat we can get stuck in high summer and the most important part ? it holds that true colour all season !
How perfect is this compact hardy shrub to light up a darker part of the garden .. and I mean darker also in the sense to be a foil against dark plants and shrubs not only the lighting !
I love this little guy : ) because I love lemon candy ?? wink wink

There is also "Physocarpus Carmel Candy" .. is this getting on your sweet tooth nerve yet ?
.. I just couldn't find a picture on the net for it .. but it has all the same attributes of these new compact fully coloured shrubs .. with carmel being the key descriptive to its colour .. I am going "yum yum" thinking about how pretty it must be !

More candy please !
Physocarpus Burgundy Candy from the "Gumdrop" line .. how is this for a foil ?
Rich burgundy colour all season with white flowers in Spring .. now that has got to look gorgeous!
Compact and ... mildew resistant .. which can be an issue with ninebark I have found , most years not bad but you can always have a year when it is a pain ! This little guy is a fighter of it!

Physocarpus Opulifolius Ruby Spice (ok .. not so much a candy but think of it as a wonderful spice ?) .. it is a little larger than the previous two but it has amazing pink flowers in Spring on top of this gorgeous colour foliage .. and you can make it a container shrub too !!

Double Delights Wedding Gown hydrangea .. I know I should not get any more hydrangea but after stumbling on a few I am totally STUCK !
Earlier to bloom than other hydrangea and it reblooms all the way up till frost ! It is compact and low maintenance with beautiful white double blooms against dark green foliage .. a beauty in your shade garden or in a container .. now how great is that !!

Now for a "Bombshell" ! aka hydrangea paniculata "Bombshell" and it is !
A break through for a dwarf habit, well branched beauty. it blooms through summer till frost and those gorgeous white flowers against the dark green foliage is stunning (I see this in my mind's eye of course, since I don't have one .... YET !) A great container shrub !
I thought I could make a get away without mentioning a hellebore ... but , no chance !
Red Racer of the "Winter Thriller" series .. is it not totally stunning ? The foliage is dark mahogany in Spring as it emerges than changes to that wonder dark green .. I can't help but LUST after it .. BIG sigh !
All these pictures are from the net of course .. same same "if I had these plants I would have my own pictures statement" ;-)
I have to STOP cruising the net and stumbling on plants I think I have to HAVE !!

Joy those are beautiful, I have a few of them on my list for when we move.

I was wondering how your Hydrangea do in that cold weather. Do they die back to the ground? My sister who lives in Armstrong said that her's do, they are Zone 5. So I had thought that when we move Hydrangeas are out of my garden. But you said that you have some. Do you only have the everblooming kind, the Bridal series, or do you have others?

Jen girl
I started out with "Little Lamb" which hooked me .. being a paniculata the foliage falls off in winter, but the flowers will stay in dried form (I cut them for inside) .. but the kind I think your sister is talking about is like what my "City Line" are .. they die back like a regular perennial.
I have Pinky Winky, 2 Quick Fire, Let's Dance Star Light (which is gorgeous) as is Twist-n-Shout .. they are all crowded in the front bed which I have to sort out this Spring .. the limbs stay on during winter, way too much going on with all of them at the same time in a small space.
I have a couple of others I bought at the end of the season and I can not for the life of me find the tags .. so they will be a surprise for me this Spring ? haha
Over all I am totally hooked oh hydrangea, both paniculata and lace cap, and these new ones that are more compact and will tolerate being a container plant .. I love them to bits so yes I want these too ! There is definetly a hydrangea for every kind of taste and situation Jen .. so you can have them too girl !!

Hey meemsync girl .. I have to stop trolling the garden/plant sites .. I have no room at the inn!!!! LOL

Oh my goodness, Joy; I MUST HAVE THAT HELLEBORE. It is gorgeous. I only have one in my garden, but I'm so looking forward to seeing what it does soon. I hope it puts on a nice flower display for me. After a long winter, a few early blooms would be nice.

I hope we get some interesting things this year at the garden centers. Home Depot surprised us last year with some interesting plants; let's hope the people at Lowe's have a few surprises in store for us. Can't wait to get started... I'm going to blow!

So will I tell you now that I plan on stocking Helleborus 'Red Racer' this season? It looks simply wonderful. As for the Hydrangea, have you scouted out 'Vanilla Strawberry' yet? It is one of the most touted recent arrivals in years. I stocked it last year, it lasted a week, sold out and then was out of stock for the remainder of the season with my distributor. Sadly, I am not a fan of the Ninebarks - too much mildew!

That Red Racer Hellebore got me! I've been wanting these for quite a while- Catherine is going to send me some seed this year, thankfully!

Happy almost spring, Joy!

Martha girl hold strong !! Don't blow your cork before we get to see what Lowes has in store for us ? haha .. Hey I have hellebore 'Orientalis" big enough now I think to split so you can have one of those too ! it was my first love and it is beautiful : )
Hang in there girl .. just a matter of another month or so? LOL

Pats .. you would have to taunt me with the fact you WILL have that beauty.. damn you ! wink wink
Yes ! I have researched StrawberryV and it is very nice too! .. hey they are trying to breed mildew resistant ninebarks and when I saw Lemon Candy I thought of you ;-)

Tessa girl : ) it is ages before we get even a hint of Spring .. enough to drive you mad? That is great to have catherine send you some seeds .. I am taking the easy way out and gong for the plant? or is that the lazy way out? LOL
