The last of the colours ....

I am trying to work on "Before & After" pictures of the garden renovations ..
Garden PA's boat has been parked right in front of the new gate/wall so I have to wait to get that out of the way before a few decent shots can be taken.
It took longer than all of us thought because of the loss of the first group of stones being ploughed under by mistake .... then the rain just kept coming ...
October was a wash out sadly because I wait all year for this special month and it is always a gamble as to how it plays out.
But ? on a happy note it is done ... now I have to hear the destruction and construction of our neighbor's new deck ... I think they are getting us back for all the noise our project created ? haha

Do you have a favorite plant, shrub or tree that changes to a breath taking colour during this season?
I have fallen madly in love with my Japanese maple "Inaba-Shidare" .
When reading it's info you would expect to see a more full weeping form .. but being the rebel I am,
I have to prune it as a small tree to make me a happy gardener .. I am obsessed with small trees !
The colour has been outstanding this year !

When we have a little sunlight .... late afternoon .... it looks like it is on fire at times, it is so intense.
So even though we have missed colours aflame in the countryside my little one here has really put on a show so beautiful it has me in awe !

Other plants that have interesting colour .... Soloman's Seal ... such a variation of creamy yellows !

So pretty against the rich greens of the ferns ....

Redstone Falls  trailing heucherella has gorgeous colours.

Little Quick Fire  is a new one this year and WOW! ... what a brilliant red the leaves turned.
I can't wait to see what it does next year ... hoping to see growth and some wonderful flowers !

I have never seen Little Lamb turn into such a deep pink like this before ... maybe because it is maturing? or maybe the conditions were just right ... they are remarkable !
The foliage is a beautiful yellow gold  ......

Finally a sneak peek of the secret garden gate .. the garden is in a sorry mess so I am going to have to dig in and get some chores done .. we may have snow on Saturday so time is racing ahead of me !

One more Inaba Shidare !

Hi Joy, I love your Inaba Shidare. I have one too which weeps a lot more and is now starting to get that bright red colouration. It's leaf tips always dry out every year from too much sun which I find ironic because we have so much shade in my gardens.
Must say I love the hydrangeas too -what colour!

Hello there Diana : ) thank you so much! .. Your cat art is so pretty, even if you weren't a cat person you would have to love those prints! haha

Hello Patty girl : )
Thank you ! I am trying to shape it into a small tree rather than the wide weeping form .. funny about your leaves with the shade provided .. and yes Little Lamb has been exceptional this year !

Elaine girl hello there : )
October was a wash out with all the rain and wind .. not leaving the leaves on the trees long enough to colour up for us to enjoy .. maybe next year?

Hello Linda thanks you so much !
I will be back to your blog for more recipes girl ! haha

Your garden is sure putting on a nice autumn show! Both of the hydrangeas you showed are gorgeous and Inaba Shidare is incredible. My favorites for fall colour are most of the acer palmatums and, although I don't have one in my garden, the Sweet Gum trees give a vibrant and long-lasting burst of color to autumn.

Hello there Mr.TOG aka Peter : )
My goodness why is it you don't have that type of acer in your garden ?
I seem to be obsessed by them and have 5 ! haha .. Crimson Queen is becoming the colour Inaba Shidare is now and they are gorgeous .. sadly I know soon they will be forced to drop their leaves and look bare.
Yes ! I saw your post with the Sweet Gum and they are beautiful .. as are so many of your intriguing plants!

That maple is fabulous Joy, such a wonderful colour! As for your garden gate, well, that is just super. You'd just want to come in and see what was behind it if you were visiting.

Thank you so much Paula girl ... I did want a rustic look to things and hopefully the plants will "spill" over a bit on the pathways softening the rock .. I am so happy to have these wonderful touches for privacy and making my secret garden come to life!

Beautiful! I love that Quick Fire hydrangea and that Japanese maple. I have neither in my garden. :( Fab stone walkway and gate. Hooray for the construction being done. :)

What a lovely blog you have! Inaba Shidare is one of the Japanese maple, I guess. We are having a great season to see maple trees starting to get bright red coloration like yours:)
Thank you for sharing!

Thanks so much Tammy girl ... I am trying to come down off the ceiling now that the garden reno is done for now ?
Some year it will be a watering system to place along all the borders .. hoping the lottery will kick in? haha
Took note of your berm usage .. I keep trying to remember that ! Thanks!

Hello Keity and thanks for dropping by ... loved those beautiful sunny pictures of that gorgeous garden .. so pretty and I am such a fan of ornamental grasses : )

Oh my goodness, I love, love your Japanese Maple! I am going to have to think what I can dig out of my shade garden to make room for one of these:) Hope you didn't get snow this weekend, Joy; we've had a killing frost and a hard freeze, so the garden is pretty much done for the year. No snow, but it snowed in South Carolina--crazy! Hope you had a great Halloween!

Hello Rose girl !
This Halloween just whizzed by very quietly .. a little sad the whole month of October was not what it should have been.
YES ! You have to have at least one Japanese maple and I recommend Inaba Shidare whole heartedly ? it has awesome colour for Fall .. and if you can't find that Crimson Queen changes to that colour eventually too.
Water in the birdbath froze .. but we still have garden clean up to do .. so this week it HAS to be DONE !!

How was your Halloween? It poured here and we did not have a single kid come to the door. Very disappointing! I have a Japanese Maple that turns that same intense red. It is always a bit of a thrill when happens to get illuminated by the sun's rays.

Jennifer girl I feel the same way when I see that intense fire sparked by just the right lighting through the leaves o my Japanese maples .. it is hypnotic ... I can't tear my eyes away from them when they are like that .. another Halloween done for with hardly a good BOO! LOL

My fall favorite is Endless Summer hydrangea. The leaves turn a gorgeous mauve that matches the mauve that the flowers turn into. Love it!

Hi Robin ... I will have to investigate that one and see what it is like .. although I have no more room ! eek !
