Mystery plant revealed finally .....

Well it took it's time but finally the question of the mystery plant is settled

Yup ... almost a weed, poor goldenrod's reputation is ... but ? .. this is a tough spot in my garden.
Dry, bugs from hell (why they are so bad here I have no idea but they are!) ..
I have no tall plants in this exact spot .. standard maculatum Joe Pye is a bit further down.
So I may let it stay there as long as it doesn't become a pest ..
I wish I knew what the original plant was that I thought I was buying ?

Thank you to all of the bloggers that tried to identify it for me .. I appreciate the help !

I'm sure the pollinators will love it regardless of it's identity Joy :)

I'm relieved that the wait is over! Goldenrod is swell as it blooms late in the season when some other plants are winding down for the year.

You might try some of the garden cultivars of goldenrod in that spot. There are some very attractive ones.

Interesting! I was just comparing a stray along the walkway at work and thought to myself this is what Joy has..... for us it simply seeded itself there. I do not stock Solidago on the bench for this exact reason! Hopefully you can keep yours under control.

Aha, I was right! As I said, I have so much volunteer goldenrod in my garden that it's usually a safe bet when I'm not sure what plant it is:) Your late summer garden in your last post is beautiful, and the sky shots are stunning! We finally have some cooler temps here, and I'm loving it--I have no excuses now for not working in the garden:) Hope it has cooled off for you, too!

This small start could have come from the wild. They insinuate themselves into a border like that. You can rip and tear it into submission if you have the fortitude. They are pretty. Lots of color for this time of year.

Hi, Joy!
I think it's SOLIDAGO, I see it everywhere here.

Hello Angie girl and how true is that ? They are not plant snobs like we humans can be.
It will provide some late season colour especially in that spot of the garden .. it is tough on plants there .. so I figure what the heck .. keep an eye on it but let it live !

Peter I knew you were on the edge of your seat with this ! wink wink ... and yes ... it is fine with me as long as it behaves itself : )

Thanks Alain .. I do love Crown of Rays and have it in my front garden ... what ever this one is in particular it is better to have a tall variety to fill this space .. so for now it fits the bill !

Sweetie you are always thinking of me : ) LOL thank you ! Yes I will get my whip and chair out just in case ... I'll see what unfolds here.

Rose you are the "Mistress of Goldenrod" ! Thank you so much for the compliments on my pictures : ) I am wishing for cooler temps ..in the teens would be great for me .. but I know they are coming eventually .. then the long long cold winter when we will all be complaining of that ? haha

Lisa girl .. I am still thinking of that black begonia in your last post ... that was so stunning ! .. I'll be watching like a hawk to see how this unfolds but it was too funny not knowing what the heck it was for so long because I know I didn't buy that ! haha

Yes Nadezda girl we finally have a definitive answer to the mystery plant ... we have it with lots of chickory, Queen Anne's Lace, and other wild flowers on the sides of the roads around Kingston .. it is pretty ... I wish I had Queen Anne's Lace in my garden .. I will have to work on that ! Do you have it over there ??

If it's happy there, I'd leave it! It's great for the pollinators. :)

Yes, Joy we have. There are many solidago and wild carrot (Queen Anne's Lace) grow here as well. But not chicory, it's too cold in winter to it.

Hi Tammy girl .. yes it is happy there and I have no problem with it as long as it behaves!LOL

I was curious Nadezda about the wild carrot thing .. it is very pretty and I would like some for my garden one day ! ... Too cold for chicory ! wow ! we have a lot of it here.

Ah yes, but which one is it? Apparently there are 30 different varieties in Ontario. Take lots of pictures, then you can figure it out when it's -37C in February and you truly have nothing better to do. I've got one that's puffed right up in an open spot - sadly it has skinny legs where I need a bit of bulk. Now that it's blooming I'll feel like a bit of a bully giving it a yank! The butterflies love it.
p.s. I'm hoping you'll reconsider next time someone asks if you'll be on a tour - just think how many folks you will inspire in person!

Hello Alain ! You are too sweet : ) I have left you a message on your contact tab.
Thank you so much !!

Barb girl .. Yes I knew there was going to be a big fat chance of me identifying which tall goldenrod this is .. I am getting to like it a bit more now especially for what it does for that rather height challenged area ... yes during the cold LONG winter I might get an idea as to what it is .. and yes I will consider it as to your other suggestion girl (shy shy ) LOL
