Firey Korean Goatsbeard !

One of the most surprising little perennials I have is this remarkable Korean Goatsbeard.
I hadn't even heard of it until a friend told me about it .. and by chance I saw one at a garden center and snapped it up. Of course once I realized what a little gem this was, after researching it on the web , I went back to get a few more and they were GONE naturally .. other gardeners KNEW !
Even with enjoying how gorgeous a little plant it is in Spring and summer .. I have not seen it go such a fantastic fiery orange as it has this Autumn. It looks artificial it is such an outrageous colour .. I have another one in the front garden but it has not reached this colour .. I tend to think because it younger and newer to my garden ? .. and this one is in the SUN bed so lots of direct sun. What ever makes this little wonder this impossible colour .. I am very grateful .. it amazes me every time I look at it .. and no matter where you are in the back garden .. you can spot this delightful little 'precious" I fear I am some what like Gollum and the "Ring" I have to admit favoritism when it comes to this "one" : )

How about this unbelievable COLOUR ????

WOW! That's ORANGE! I looked up the plant details in the link you provided. It looks like a part shade plant and I have a full sun garden. Is it deer resistant? I'll do a bit more research since I think I could tuck it up next to a large grass for some shade. Thanks, Cameron

Hi Cameron .. I went against the shade rules with this one and it seems to be fine .. over 2 years old now and hasn't croaked on me ! .. yet? LOL
I'm sure it is deer resistant .. goatsbeard is on the whole as I undestand it .. give it a try. You have nothing to lose : )

What a striking plant Joy. I always think of Goatbeard with the creamy blooms, but this one is a great focal point.

Hi Joy, that is one beautiful plant. I have a plain old goatsbeard and it looks nothing like this. At first I thought it was one of several perennials with that color until I clicked on your photo and saw the ferny leaves and remembered you said it was a goatsbeard. Must do more research! I can see why it is a favorite *one* for you. lol

Ooh, great fall color! What does it look like in summer?

This is a gorgeous plant Joy and a perfect fall colored addition to a garden. I wish the goatbeards liked clay and limestone, even the native one thinks it's too dry! Just a few weeks away until the big holiday!

Patsi .. until 2 years ago I hadn't heard of it either .. then it was a MISSION to get at least one .. now I have two and I adore them .. you have to try one girl !

Hi Gail .. it is raining here .. since last night and phew ! what a relief .. once this clears up I am on the BIG "H" alert and have to dig out my decorations : )
I wish you could have this one in your garden .. it is a cutie !

Hi cg .. thanks for stopping by ! .. this is a little wonder and a BIG wow when it comes to Autumn colour for sure : )
Maybe it is getting kimchee secretly ? LOL

msrobin .. hello there ! .. it is really pretty in Spring and summer with tight ferny foliage and little plumes .. it looks great all year round but the Fall colour is amazing eh ?

Hi Frances .. isn't it a remarkable colour for the family of goatsbeard ? .. I have two standard ones and they are maturing nicely with those beautiful plumes. But these little guys stole my heart and I look forward each Fall to see how they shine like this .. yup ! bestest colour of the year ! LOL

Hi Cindee .. I wonder if you might try one ? go on ... you know you WANT to girl ! : )

Hello there pg .. I really like my standard goatsbeard but these "Mini-Me" ones are something else .. that colour just shocks you when you see it in the garden .. so yes ! a little focal point with punch : )

Certainly see that from a distance! I think I'll look into it too. I've got a very narrow space at the front of the house which could do with some autumn cheering.

Glorious! I too adore that red, it's happening around here in western WA by way of the vivid black huckleberry bushes, and also in the dying bracken ferns lending a subtle rusty tone as they lay in repose atop the bushy salal. I have got to try some of the Korean Goatsbeard - it reminds me of Nandina, but with much more to offer with the cute fuzzy flower heads. I see lots of fine color in your garden!!! Good work. Bonnie

I have a couple of those little guys, but I've never had them turn that color, that is brilliant. Maybe full sun is what does the trick, I'm going to have to try moving some of mine.

Hi megan .. I'm thinking it has to be full sun too .. I have one in the front garden and it isn't near this colour at all .. it has part time shade .. so being "mean"? by putting it into full sun does wonders ? LOL

Hi Bonnie .. I have never seen hucklberry and it sounds wonderful with that black ! .. I can't imagine not enjoying such striking colours that we have .. This year it is tremendous .. most likely because we had extra rain this summer so the leaves aren't that stressed from drought, and can put on a stunning show : )

Hi Lucy .. you really have to try this one .. I love the little guys : )

Hi Joey .. I'm not sure why this one is such a stunner .. but I am enjoying it big time !

I've never heard of this plant, either. That is some bright shade of orange! Lovely.

Your plants have a striking fall colour. I like the Korean goatsbeard for its tidy little mounding shape too. I had some before, but I went away all summer once after planting them, and they died out. I should try them again, with proper care.

CanadianGardenJoy said...

Northern Shade .. Yes ! do try them again .. it sounds like you enjoyed even the bit of time you had them .. now if yours will turn the same colour as this one for Autumn .. that would be a real eye catcher for you !

Hi Rose .. it really surprised me too with such an intense orange .. I am loving it ! LOL

I sure am glad that you are enjoying this little one. The wonderful thing about you is that you try so many plants that others recommend!
