Are You Sure Your Glass is "tempered" ??

Well .. there we were .. hubby quietly on the computer in the family room .. me at my usual station in my "office" aka kitchen .. sort of late afternoon .. everything was nice and quiet .. the sun was shining .. the birds were singing .. the whole Mr. Roger's Neighborhood setting .. then .. CRASH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and I mean CRASHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!
I think I jumped a couple of feet up in the air .. took a look out on the deck and there was our little coffee table smashed to smithereens ? shattered to shards ? Holy crap it was blown up for god sake !!!!
Hubby nearly had a heart attack racing upstairs to see what happened .. talk about disturbing the peace ?
Nothing hit it .. nothing bumped it .. nothing was out there for heaven sakes .. it just erupted on its own .. now how weird is that .. talk about Friday the 13th having a laugh on us ?
This is supposed to be tempered glass ? .. we have had a large table on the patio for almost 10 years and not anything, so much as a chip has happened to it .. and believe me I have thumped some containers and what not down on the poor thing .. and nothing has happened.
Winthrop witnessed the whole explosion yet he can't actually explain what happened .....

So ..................... are you THAT sure your glass garden tables are tempered ? is there a possibility they might misbehave ? .. keep an eye on them people .. you just never know !

Good thing we are getting a new deck .. look at the state of this poor old one .. eeuuuwwww !

The deck took it out! If it was going to be replaced...it was taking the table with it! I think I would put Winthrop in a safe place;)
Who knows what is next!

Spontaneous, huh? Could it be a gremlin from your Halloween escapades playing a little Friday 13th joke on you? :-)

Gail .. I am still laughing over your take on the whole drama, and I think you are too right girl : )

Cameron .. now that could also be an explanation of it all .. leave it to you girl ! ; )

Hi Heather .. actually, DH cleaned it up for me while I was out , buying a bigger dust pan in fact .. so it is kind of funny ?

When I was a kid once we had a drinking glass shatter in a million pieces like that, just sitting on the counter with nothing going on. Scary. At least no one was hurt.

Hi Rosemary .. we still can't get over how it just went on self destruct mode .. and yes ! so lucky no one was there at the time .. it does make you wonder though eh ?

Oh my! Lucky it happened when nobody is outside. I had a glass hummingbird feeder on the deck and I forgot to empty it before the winter and sure enough it exploded. The glass pieces is still on the deck.

I found an explanation.

Apparently tempered glass is not unbreakable, it just breaks into smaller, less sharp pieces. Sometimes it doesn't shatter until weeks (!) after the damage is done.

A lot of people have been having trouble with Martha Stewart glass-topped tables.

Hi Louise .. The funny thing is we have had a large garden table down on the patio for 10 years and nothing has happened to it (now I'm hesitant about it all) .. this just exploded .. I'm watching NOW !

Hi Rosemary .. I just read the Martha Stewart table problem article .. now that is scary .. and yes ! the noise is amazing when it blows up ! .. makes me rather wary of glass tables in general now .. thanks for the information girl !

Bad tempered table is more like it! I guess if I had been sitting out in the cold this winter I would be ready to explode too! It's a good thing it was too cold for that garden party!

Wow! makes ya wonder what kind of explosive materials they're making these things with!! I think it has something to do with you & Halloween! It may be a spook trying to haunt you, kind of 'getting you in that freaky, 'spirit-y'...(haha)...kind of mood;-) Happy Halloween!

Oh, one more thought...did you ever stop and think that maybe Winthrop has a bad temper...especially lately? He is so anxious for warmer weather he just couldn't contain his wrath any longer:-O

229 Days until Halloween Jan !!
Yes .. it had crossed my mind about Winthrop .. then again he might have tried to protect the table when those naughty spooks visited .. and it was just too much for him .. poor guy .. and of course the "Benchwarmers" were fast asleep ... what can you do ?? LOL

Too scary! I have been keeping an eye on my neighbors property while they are away and every other day or so, I walk around the house to make sure everything is ok. Last week, I saw the shattered remains of their glass top table. Like yours, it just shattered! Must be something cosmic going on!

Hi Giddy .. The funny thing is our much larger much older table hasn't done a thing, and it has been a bit knocked about .. but now I keep looking at it .. I think it is "going" when we get things finished and put back together here anyways ; )
