"Caught with my plants down" ......

Well ... what can I say ? I broke the pact I made with a garden friend a few weeks ago. Confessed out in the open .. she knows .. I know .. EVERYONE knows .. I was NOT going to do seeds .. we just don't get on well with each other .. yet here we are AGAIN .. two different kinds of Cosmos .. two dwarf sunflowers .. Moon Flower vine .. and to go with that vanilla flavor Morning Glory (wait for it ...) "Chocolate" .................. I feel totally exposed now .. I should be guilt free shouldn't I ? .. I confessed to my seed crime ....
Yet some how I had to add to the frenzy with a public incident in Costco that sent my husband to the display gliding rocker, as if he didn't know who the heck I was .. he was just testing the rocker out and had no idea who that CRAZY woman was ?? fully engulfed in the plant package racks (with the worst part of my character sticking out in the isle) ..
It just didn't seem to matter to me when there was promise of satisfaction only a few inches away from my finger tips .. that was all I could see .. a package of 8 Halcyon hosta roots .. I had to have them .. even worse than the chocolate episode I just went through.
My garden brain over ruled my chocolate brain in this case at least.
Last week , or was that the week before ? .. it is becoming a blur to me ...(danger !! danger !! Will Robinson !!! .... keeps tiptoeing through my mind) .. in Price Chopper I found Cranesbill geranium, 2 roots for less than $4 .. product of Holland .. so they are good stock, right ? ... I stuck them in my closet .. way at the back .. I shudder to think about how I usually forget these things at times .. would they have grown out of the box and rooted themselves into the floor ? can that sort of thing happen ??
In any case .. I figure if I put this out as public record .. I have to stop now .. until the garden centers open at least .. right ? .. I will stop now ... RIGHT ???

Will Robinson! I wonder how many people know that saying?? I loved that show as a kid. I still say that!(-:
Costco always has great stuff for sale. I want to get everything when I go there.
When you said you put the roots in the closet I thought of Jack in the Beanstalk!(-:

STEP AWAY FROM THE HOSTA!

Step back, and drop the chocolate, and the bulbs lady, this is the plant police talking!

They probably have a program for gardeners like us. I work at a garden centre, I have a huge box of bulbs sitting on my living room floor. They need to be planted, and yes I do think that they will grow into the carpet and start to take over. LOL.

Ha!! You crack me up. I wish I could have been there to see the crazy lady drooling over the chocolate...LOL...Will it stop you ask. NO, I keep telling myself the same thing, then I place yet another 2 orders for seeds. Thanks for letting us all know.

I can relate. Our local garden center had their big spring expo this last weekend. I only went to look, really, that's all. Riiight!

Joy....
First off, the title of this post had me almost peeing my plants... brilliant! Soooo.... it would appear that we will not be the best of friends for one another after all.... no self discipline when it comes to plants.... what am I to do with YOU!.... aside of offer my sincerest welcome to the CLUB! What the hell are these retailers thinking when they have sales this early on in the season... the GAll, the AUDACITY... the sudden LIGHTNESS of the wallet! Bravo. Good luck with all of your purchases my friend!

Joy, You have it bad my dear! Costco has those alluring packages...I know I bought 3 bags of bulbs last fall! My seed collection is nuts and very few are going to survive my direct sowing method...I should paper the wall with the packets! gail

Joy - this made me laugh so much, but I'm afeared that you will never be 'cured', no matter how many times you confess ;)

Yes, it will slow down. You are simply caught up in Spring Fever.

Hi MT ..my heart was pounding too girl .. I was lucky not to go into cardiac arrest from being SO naughty ; ) Yes ! I will post every time I'm naughty (or nice?) .. I just know it will continue ... Big sigh ! wink wink !

Cindee .. you are the only person who got, or mentioned my robot warning girl ! I was glued to the TV for shows like that too : )
Shame on Costco for tricking me every time .. and what would have happened if I forgot those geranium .. I'm afraid to think about it girl ! haha

Jen .. Too funny girl ! I bet my hubby wished you had been there with a bull horn right to my ear with that ! .. I can't imagine working at a nursery/garden center .. I would never have any pay left after buying all the plants I wanted .. how do you do it !!

CherylR .. we should have a sub-club within here to help each other out .. get over each mini plant crises that we let loose upon .. wait .. maybe we would just drag each other into more .. like a cascade affect ? YIKES !!!!

Hi Cathy .. my plant brain says the exact same thing girl !!

Cameron .. other gardeners think we are normal but what do normal people think of gardeners ? LOL

Hi Tessa .. that morning glory screamed at me to take it home .. I am so curious about it .. I think I read a bit last that it was an exceptional colour .. and being called chocolate ain't bad either eh ?? LOL

Jill .. THAT ! is exactly what I say every darn time my brain gets into sneaky mode .. it tries to meander around what I am zoned into .. all innocent .. but BANG .. it happens again !!

Teza .. I may have to post warnings about reading my posts at times I think ? haha
We could be very dangerous together, especially since you really know the great plants to latch on to .. I'd push the garden cart while you pick them out !!
Yes .. how dare those stores do that to me .. take advantage of a winter weary, plant mad, chocolate induced, menopausal, maniac, like ME !

Gail girl ! maybe we can create a new interior design wave of seed package wall paper .. all of our garden friends would buy it in a snap I think .. we could make some serious money ..to buy .. more .. PLANTS ! My direct sow method is going to be sad too .. another club to join "Sad Sowers" ??

Sue ... so this could lead to convoluted thinking then ? I'm confessing but not really because I don't believe I am confessing ? Now I have a headache girl !!

VP .. Glad to get a giggle out of you girl .. but the whole idea of confessing .. isn't that therapy of some sort .. that I should be better NOW ? but I won't be ? jeez!

Hey, I decorate with seed packets! I have some in one of those photo holders with multiple branches, and others propped up here and there.

It's fun when the comments are as great to read as the original post.

I know you'll quit. Until the next time that is. I'm surprised the stores don't roll out the red carpet when you arrive.

Just remember, "The first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem." So, you're on your way. But I have the same problem... ;)

Joy, you made me laugh out loud! You have a way with words...and this seed-thing is something I can definitely relate to!

My hubby won't even go near a plant aisle with me, he knows it'll be a l-o-n-g wait. I can pass clothes, shoes, and yes, even jewelry, but don't get me near a plant aisle, or I will HAVE to meander down it!

CanadianGardenJoy said...

Hi Sue.. that is a wonderful idea girl ! I could see it in my mind's eye as soon as I read your comment ! Great way to give a gardener a present too ! Yup .. I think we all have a sense of humour : )

Dear Mr. WiseA** .. what makes you think they don't ? wink wink
Glad to see you survived your journey .. did ya' miss ME ? LOL

Nat .. I think we are all in deep poo poo even when we do admit our "habit" .. it just isn't going to go away .. is it ? LOL

Hi Katarina .. glad you got a giggle over all of this silliness girl ! .. it is a hungry beast this garden affliction .. it has to be fed constantly : )

Nola .. we are a different breed of women aren't we ? gardeners of the female persuasion don't shop for the usual things other women do .. we LOVE the past, present and future of seeds/plants and our gardens : ) .. my hubby stays well back now for sure .. I think he forgot how I am after such a long winter ! hahaha

Hah. I can sympathize. I went into a department store to buy cat food and a few other things, and what happened? Two huge succulents (a graphtopetalum and some sort of kalanchoe or sedum) leapt into my cart without my consent. There was nothing I could do. But I don't do seeds. Nope. Not a chance. Nada.

I think the garden centers should start getting plants in much earlier so lots of us quit wasting money on seeds that we'll never get to germinate or big enough to go in the garden! That's my story anyway and I'm sticking to it. I know I fall prey just because I need a flower fix.

Ha!!! Just remember that all-purpose answer to "Danger! Danger, Will Robinson!"--"Never fear, SMITH is here!" (Followed shortly by my favorite, "Oh the pain, the pain...") At least you know your hostas and geraniums will thrive and soon look fantastic liek all your other plants!

Anonymous said...

Did the pact come with a price tag or some other prize? Can't remember, but I should have known that you wouldn't stick to it (LOL). Oh well, you will have fun with everything new.

CanadianGardenJoy said...

Hi Jodi .. Some how I take comfort in the fact quite a few people don't do seeds too (I can't really count sunflowers as seeds ? they are just too easy .. right ? LOL)
I REALLY get that part of plants JUMPING into the cart against our free will .. they hold us hostage some how , we just can't get control of the situation can we ? : )

Kathleen .. I believe your story girl .. I definitely do NOT germinate seeds in the house either girl ! I do direct sow and let nature take its course , or not ? LOL .. yes, what can't we see "plants" earlier to keep us from doing stupid things like I do ?? hahaha

"ben' !! YES !!! the rest of the hilarious phrases were pounding in my head but I was wondering how many other people would get IT ! Boy, does that bring back memories : ) .. Dr. Smith was so annoying !! .. Yes .. I usually don't buy just "root" plants .. but I could not pass up these sweet deals !!

Rose !! .. You have been so GOOD during this whole fiasco .. I can't believe how you have not bought any seeds .. or mail order plants .. I know you have so much in your gardens you have to dig up and divide .. I guess thinking about all of that work has kept you "GOOD" !! LOL

HA Joy, you are too funny. All of the seeds you chose will do well planted outside after the soil warms up, you actually made excellent choices! I laugh at the thought of you and the plant racks too, dear hubby. :-) Halcyon is a fantastic hosta, one of the few that is doing well with our drought. It can even take some sun and that color is like no other hosta, no matter what the newest and greatest innovations say. If one would only have a single variety of hosta, halcyon should be the one. Geraniums growing in the closet, you sound like my daughter Semi. It has happened!
Frances

CanadianGardenJoy said...

Hi there Frances .. yup ! if anyone had taken a picture , well they would have nailed a very embarrassing situation for me .. but the lust for plants takes over ! haha .. Yes ! my plan exactly .. direct sow is more fool proof (I say that every year and some how seeds don't make it ? but I keep on trying !)
Halcyon was my deliberate choice .. that is why I was willing to make an idiot of myself .. I have a few blue hosta but didn't collect this one yet .. but I have read such good reviews on it I HAD to have it .. and to have 8 of them .. well they will be a repeated theme in my garden and I am a happy camper ! .. I still giggle over Semi's name .. too cute .. but closet plants could get scary ? LOL

You are such a riot Joy, lol! Poor hubby, mine is the same way when I get lost in the racks of garden seeds & bulbs at this time of the year. Looks like you got some great stuff, and those are all fairly easy to grow too! Can't wait to see the results!

Cindy Garber Iverson said...

It's SO hard, isn't it? I used to be really lousy at seeds so that gave me incentive to step away from the seed racks. Then a dear friend who's a horticultural instructor at the local college not only taught me how to successfully plant seeds BUT she calls me every time she has FREE seeds from garden centers that give her overstock. I gotta tell ya' that solved my problem. I've got so many free seed packets in my collection that I have NO desire to buy them anymore.

Oh my goodness, I am just as guilty! I say no seeds this year then seeds find there way into my hands. Not much luck with them on some years and other years, they are beautiful! It is so hard to pass up the pretty colored packets isn’t it? I found the same display at the Costco while in Atlanta a few weeks ago. I ended up with two of those large sacks of bulbs! They are now in the ground and hopefully will bring me some color in the garden. Good Luck with your goodies...

CanadianGardenJoy said...

Hi Racquel .. it is such a mess in the back garden it is scary right now .. so I have to use my imagination about how things will come together and look WONDERFUL .. right ? it will look wonderful eventually .. right ? YIKES !! haha

Cindy ! You lucky gardener you ! I think I would better adapt to the whole seed thing to if I had your friend as well girl ! haha .. it is so hard to pass garden things at times .. BIG sigh !!

Skeeter .. hope the birthday is going well ! my son's is tomorrow .. cheesecake day for us all !! haha
Yes .. I blame Costco for a lot .. our beautiful garden shed that will go up .. all my garden gloves .. these goodies .. well, the list can be LONG to say the least .. good luck to us all right !!!

Robin's Nesting Place said...

I'm guilty too, I mean how many packets of Bright Lights Cosmos does a gal need? I don't even care for orange flowers, but for some reason I keep picking up packets of these. We won't even talk about all of the zinnia and sunflower packets I have. It is crazy!

Is there a self-help book that you can recommend? One that you've heard of but obviously haven't read yet? (LOL)

CanadianGardenJoy said...

Robin .. there is something about Cosmos .. I'm a "Sonata' type gal .. shorter and very prolific flowering one. But when I saw this white one .. I had to grab it .. no free will .. my hand put it in the basket and that was THAT !
Girl .. even if I had heard of the book .. my ears would have shut down on me and well the reading as you said obviously NEVER happened .. I think it is hopeless for us to even try ? LOL

Corner Gardener Sue said...

I had to respond to Robin's comment. I keep picking up lettuce packets, trying to remember if I've gotten romaine yet or not. Right now, I can't remember if I have gotten them. I do have lots of lettuce seeds, though.

I do have more seeds to get planted.

CanadianGardenJoy said...

Sue .. I think we all have a soft spot for certain seeds and our memory seems to falter a bit on those ones .."do I have them ? .. maybe not .. maybe I need this type ?" .. it can go on an on until we actually get something in the ground ! : )

Corner Gardener Sue said...

I did some sorting of seeds this afternoon, and found 2 packages of romaine. One was a smaller variety, so that's good. I'm glad I didn't buy the package I had in my hand the other day!

CanadianGardenJoy said...

Sue ! So no doubles then girl ? .. that always makes me crazy if I think I don't have something and then I buy it AGAIN ! haha
You are sorted then girl ! LOL
