Clematis "Omoshiro" ?

I have to admit I am being seduced at least once a week by another plant I have stumbled on with garden/plant sites. This time initially from Gardenimport and this awesome looking clematis Omoshiro. These pictures are NOT mine .. they are from two sites so they have the acknowledgment and praise for the photos .. although the Gardenimport site has the most alluring picture. I love the edging .. the fact it will bloom Spring and late summer .. large simple flower but with extraordinary colouring and edging.
I am wondering if anyone out there has had experience with this one .. it is really capturing my attention and interest ... and I might just succumb to ordering it.
So .. if you have this please reply and let me know what you think of this clematis ? What zone you are in would be helpful too .. I'm in 5b so things can get a bit iffy.
Thanks for any replies and information !!

I'm not in your zone, but I'd be tempted to try it, the color is amazing! I love the way you worded that you were "seduced"; that is exactly what happens, isn't it? I may have to borrow that phrase and use it myself!

Gorgeous! I love clematis- it would look so good with the new one I'm planning on getting a cutting to this year, I'll have to look for it.

What a temptress! I love bi-colored petals. I don't have any experience with them so I can't help you. I just wanted to stop by and admire them.

Joy, I don't have experience with this one, but she's a beauty. I've got lavender-blue 'Will Goodwin' clematis ordered for spring - despite not having a perfect spot for it, will have to think about that - and am so excited. Clematis are supposed to be good for cutting. I can imagine a bowl of english roses with a few clematis blooms mixed in - yummy! Though not as yummy as cookie dough. Yes, I had some peanut butter & milk chocolate chip dough today. Regards, VW

You are seducing me to try yet another clematis that will curl up and die when our summer heat and drought gets to them. Those are beautiful. Girl, you are a bad influence on a plant addict:)

Those are definitely suductive looking blooms. The photos in all the catalogs are so tempting now. :)

Hi Nola .. that is exactly the way it feels to me (a natural emotion for all of us gardeners !) I look quickly at first .. then it imprints itself on my garden heart .. have to go back and look slowly .. SNAP !! its got me : ) .. this is such a draining process girl .. we NEED chocolate when going through the process, actually fudge would speed it up ? : )

Gail .. girl, you aren't allowed to look at plants right now .. you are working in your garden and you have to get that done before you can have "desert" !!!
It is a beauty though : )

Tessa .. I am really being tugged in this direction .. Gardenimport (Canadian side) has a couple of other seductive ones I just might succumb to .. BIG sigh !

Hi Cinj ! .. come by any time to have a peek at what I am discovering and moaning about .. my wish list is ridiculous .. no space but big imagination ? LOL

VW .. girl !!! you made me laugh : )
YES ! a bowl full of gorgeous flowers and scent from the roses .. well talk about peaceful meditation with sight and smell .. perfect ! I have a few clematis but this one really caught my eye, as to where the heck I would put it ? I'm like you ... still in the planning stage .. and what about that cookie dough girl ? I'm waiting for a bite of it now !!

Debbie .. I am here to TEMPT YOU ! I did see that in my mind's eye though .. gorgeous plant lovingly cared for .. then that full on heat drying it up and poof ! poor thing gone .. but , maybe in a pot close to the house in shade .. you taking extra care to make sure it is happy ? As if you don't have enough to do already ?? LOL

PGL .. I think the garden catalogs have become amazing marketers with spot on pictures to drive us into a frenzy now .. they are photographed so well who couldn't fall in love with the plants ??

Beautiful! I don't know anything about that clematis.

This one is really something! I'd definitely try it, if I were you. (I might try it myself - I just found a garden center which could supply it.)

We sort of started a collection of clematis last summer. We have five and I don't have any idea where we are going to plant them.--Randy

I don't have this one but I would love to have it(-:
I love clematis!!!!! They are all beautiful I think(-: I especially love the ones that bloom twice!

garden girl said...

I'm no help as I'm not familiar with this one. Sure is a beauty though Joy, and I can see why it's seduced you!

CanadianGardenJoy said...

Hi Cameron .. I hadn't seen it before myself this year. I'm really mooning over it now ? LOL

Katarina .. that would be interesting for you and I (in different parts of the world) to have it and see how it behaves for us !!

Randy .. where do you have those clematis now ? .. some do great just in a nice big pot and a trellis of sorts .. that is a nice way to have them because you can move them around. We'll be doing that with passion flowers (if the supplier has them) and Morning Glory if I can sneak it in ? haha

Cindee .. I was a big fan of them .. had two for a while .. one was lost to the dreaded "wilt' and I thought .. ugh ! but then I quietly started gathering more and I'm liking them all a lot !!

Linda .. I know you have been seduced by some plants girl .. what ones have really caught your eye .. I won't tell anyone ! hehehe

garden girl said...

shhhh, don't tell Joy, but I've been seduced by hellebores recently, not to mention every variety of heuchera I can get my grubby little hands on! Then of course there are all the natives that keep trying to seduce me recently - many have been successful!

Brenda Pruitt said...

And the blossoms are so delicate and feminine! I've been being seduced by blooms for days now and can't stop buying!
Brenda

CanadianGardenJoy said...

Linda .. I am lacking in hellebore too .. I just have one, even though it is a beauty .. I know I NEED more !! and I am a heuchera fan too girl : )Have you seen 'Birthday Cake" or "French Quarter" ?? I don't know how this is going to play out but I'm sneaking in as many as I can still !!

Brenda that is how i think of this one too , a girlie clematis for sure ! .. be glad you can actually be buying and planting .. this is building up to an explosion in me !! LOL

Hi Joy, what a lovely creature. I am totally off clemmies after the last two years of drought. Only a couple are even blooming and many have died. Water hogs they are, beautiful water hogs though. I know what you mean about temptation. I am giving in to White Flower Farm and Baker Creek seeds at the moment. HA
Frances

CanadianGardenJoy said...

Frances .. I love looking at Whiteflower Farm site .. it is gorgeous and full of great information ! .. We have dry yet humid summers here usually .. but the last two years more rain and snow has been topping us up with ground water and better conditions. I just recently got into a few more clematis .. and this one looks so gorgeous it may have hooked me : )

Joy they're still in the pots they came in right now. We knew they needed cool feet and warm vines and we just weren't sure where to put them so they would thrive.--Randy

I haven't grown this one, but if you want information on it, check the Clematis forum on this site http://www.gardenbuddies.com/forums/. The people on there are Clematis breeders & fanatics who I am sure have grown that one. You should have no trouble growing it. It is hardy in our Zone. Just remember to give it a couple of years to settle in before you expect it to put on 2 shows, though it might surprise you and do so the first year. I am trying with all my strength not to become a Clematis collector, but I feel my willpower waning...

CanadianGardenJoy said...

Hi Randy .. yes that really is the formula to keeping them happy. What I do is plant the roots a bit sideways and have a piece of slate rock over it after I get the dirt in .. then on top of the slate I still put black mulch on (my garden is now a black mulch one from the red I started out with) .. I have been really lucky so far with what I am doing. Hope you find just the right spots and we get to see how they do !

Hello the MMD ! .. thank you for that link : ) I will check it out for sure ! I didn't intend to be a collector .. I'm not really .. well, maybe a little bit of one ? I think it happened last year when a few I put in the garden, in a RUSH (got them on a super sale too cheap to believe) well you know I didn't do a great job BUT they came back in the Spring and were gorgeous : )

WiseAcre said...

That is a beauty. Since Mr. McGregor's Daughter said they should be fine in your zone I think you should go ahead and order two and bring me one.

Joy, I can certainly see how that clematis would tempt you, it's gorgeous! I "need" a new clematis myself, but I told myself I wouldn't buy another large-flowered version like that one. They get clematis wilt much easier. I'll try to find another, more trust-worthy species with smaller blooms. But if I spotted that one in a garden center, I can almost guarantee I wouldn't be able to resist it!

Kerri said...

I agree, Clematis are very hard to resist, and Omoshiro is glorious, to say the very least! What wonderful colors!
I haven't grown it, but MMD's link hopefully will be helpful. I'll have to check it out myself.
More snow here today, but the sun is shining at the moment. I hope you're having a good weather day in the frozen north :)

Dear Mr. WiseA** .. Now how could I tell exactly what you were going to say about this ? .. You know I am still annoyed about not being able to enter that contest that made you my prisoner for how ever long it took you to style my garden just right !! Such a lucky escape as that and you still taunt me sir ? shame on you .. who ever buys it first buys two, meaning you ! LOL

Robin I felt that way too with my first and only(so far) wilt case .. I thought NEVER again ! .. but I was sucked in with some beauties while pretending NOT to LOOK ? haha .. you should be shopping with me .. we would keep each other strong .. or knock each other out running for the clematis ? LOL

Kerri .. I was thinking of you when we were watching the birds for a bit this morning .. did I already say that ? .. seems a little twilight zone today .. could be over spillage of WINTER beginning to wear me down ? .. we had a tiny ray of sun but more HUGE snow flakes .. aaarrggghhh !

Joy, I don't know what is your final decision, but let me tell you, that I fully understand you. I am fighting my plant buying addiction and despite of that I bought this exactly Omoshiro last Autumn. I am living in zone 6, didn't cover it for winter, so soon I will be able to tell you, how it survived our -20 last month.
Greetings,
Ewa

Ewa ! Thanks for stopping by girl : ) .. I will be so interested to see how it did in your garden .. some times I can get away with a zone 6 plant because of the protection I have in my garden. This clematis really does tug at me though .. and my wallet ? LOL

Hello gittan ! I stopped by your blog and left a comment. I loved your header picture very much : ) Such a beautiful sunset or sunrise ? shot .. lots of lovely things on your blog : )

What pretty and unique clematis with the dainty edging.
I don't know anything about them, but it is always fun to try a new plant that is so gorgeous.
Last year I bought a Chocolate Cosmos because I just had to have it.
Chocolate color and scent, yum.
So I vote you buy the clematis.

Hi Joy,
Just getting around to reading your post! It's already at the top of the picks...sorry I wasn't earlier;)
I love clematis...all types, really. but these oriental ones are quite seductive, I agree;)ha ha

I hope you are doing well these day! I'll have to get my act together and visit more often! It's sometimes hard to keep up w/everything. I'm really into looking at as many bright flowers as I can find, anywhere, and any time! So keep the photos coming girl!!

CanadianGardenJoy said...

Terra ! I have been chasing the chocolate cosmos for a few years now .. I didn't commit to one at a nursery and regret it now .. but perhaps this year I will finally succumb to one ! Does it really smell like chocolate ?? : )

Hi Jan .. don't worry girl ! I find it overwhelming myself to try and visit all these great blogs .. now with out Spring projects starting up I'm going to be busy so I know I will fall behind .. but we can always catch up right : )

So I am curious if you did finally purchase and plant 'Omoshiro'.

If so how has it been for you ie hardiness and flower production?

It is again available for purchase at Gardenimport.com.
