Have you done this ?

I was so enamored by those delicious yellow tulips that were sprouted in a huge glass vase.
These soft yellow tulips were so pretty I wanted to save them .. but I have never done anything like this before and I was wondering if anyone has, and what advice they could give me ?
Bouquet of water bound tulips, many weeks ago.
I have done that singular "hyacinth in a small water vase" ..
But I had never bothered to save the bulb.
So this is what I did .. I let the tulips "mature" as much as possible, then snipped the "seed head". Leaving the leaves to die back and feed the bulbs as much as possible.
I cleaned them up, and put them in a brown paper lunch bag .. WITH a label of course.
Knowing how I am .. that memory would have flown out the window quite quickly.
Its just that they were so beautiful I couldn't bear the idea of throwing them out.
The filtered light through them was gorgeous.
So what do you think my chances are for them staying "good" until this Fall to plant in the garden ?
Normally when I saved tender bulbs (lifting them in the fall) I would sprinkle them with garden sulphur .. to be on the safe side .. but I don't have any on hand right now .. maybe later ?

Meanwhile ... I am so glad I got the little desk LED grow light thing.
I think it really adds positive light to help combat SAD .. especially right now .. snow fall warnings yet again.
It doesn't really express well in this picture .. the light is far more attractive and warm.
My yoga frog inspires me .. so much so, that I sent one to my friend in Northern Ireland because we both have our struggles and rely on yoga to help us through.
How could you not smile when looking at this mini yoga master ?

I love the tulips, but that froggie is amazing.
I'm trying to grow some tulips in a container. We shall see.

I think you are doing the right thing with your tulips. I wouldn't wait until fall to plant them. I would plant them as soon as you can. I have done that with Hyacinth bulbs that I have forced during winter. They come through just fine.
Your light and fern should get you through the rest of winter. Your frog makes it all the perfect vignette.
I have a friend that loves frogs. She has them everywhere and she does yoga too. I do occasional yoga, usually during winter. Helps to keep me from getting too creaky.
Hang in there. It won't be as long as it has been and the sun will warm up this place we call home.

YAY! Froggy is looking superb; my darling one says hello! xx
LOVE your tulips, I may have been living with my head in a bush but I didn't know tulips could do that! They are stunning and yellow is such a happy colour - hope they last for ages xx

Hi Jen, thanks very much .. I loved the tulips and totally in love with my yoga frog ;-)
I would never take on trying to grow tulips like this .. but I sure would take advantage of buying them ! LOL
Fingers crossed they will survive in my garden !

Thanks so much Lisa for your experience with planting the bulbs as soon as possible in the Spring.I am so glad I got the light (I had the frog before hand but it is a total blast as a combination for me) .. yup, the yoga helps with my muscle constriction and the different arthritises ? LOl .. that I have .. sadly it will be quite a bit longer here for Spring .. you will be ahead of us for sure , but I will try not to be jealous ok ? LOL

Sweetie ! so glad we are the sisterhood of the Froggy Yoga Mistress ! LOL
Those tulips did last for ages in the water forcing vase .. and now with any luck I might just have them in the garden for a cycle too .. fingers crossed !!

I've never grown tulips like that, but I will now. They are beautiful, I do hope they grow for you when you plant them out. Oh, your lamp looks sooo inviting and I just love your yoga frog.xxx

Hello Snowbird and thank you ! .. I really hope the tulips will take as well, I'm glad Lisa suggested planting them right away (well in about 7-8 weeks for here).
Funny enough even though a fern is low light it seems really happy with the light .. and so does my yoga frog ? LOL

I'm the last person to give advice on growing, much less saving, tulips as they're another plant that doesn't grow in my climate (although I'm trying species tulips this year). I saw Lisa's comment and, given your cold climate, planting them as soon as you could work the soil makes some sense to me - it's similar to the approach I've used here to naturalize Hippeastrum (Amaryllis). Or maybe experiment with both approaches to see which works best?! I love the frog.

Hi Kris and thanks ! .. I have never had tulips presented in water like this vase before so I wanted to see if I could save them .. yes, I think planting them as soon as I can would help them become "acquainted" ? with my garden ;-) .. fingers crossed !

Hi, Joy! I've never tried forcing bulbs in water alone, so I have no advice for you on that specifically. However, I've many times saved grocery bulb pots and planted them into the garden – usually just keeping them in the soil after the foliage dies and dries and then separating them and replanting them in fall. Success has been about 50-50, but what do you have to lose? One pot of pink hyacinths I received when our eldest daughter was born continued to flower for 22 years, until I forgot where they were planted and accidentally dug through them.

On another subject, did you know that the Garden Bloggers Fling is in Madison, Wisconsin this year? Actually in a climate similar to our own! Could I tempt you to go? Have a look at the gardenbloggersfling.blogspot.com website for info. Quite a few of our online friends will be there. It would be wonderful to meet you in person after all these years.

Hello there Helen girl ! So nice to hear from you and what an amazing hyacinth to have flowered that many years ! .. this is the first time I have heard of bulbs going for so long .. it makes you respect what bulbs are capable of doing for sure.
I bought this whole set up at Costco never thinking I would try and save the bulbs .. but they were so pretty and like you said .. what have I got to lose ? So fingers crossed ;-)
I would so love to come to the fling .. the thought of finally meeting so many on line friends would be fantastic .. but the rotten health issues that limit me, makes me crazy at times.
I really hate missing out on something like that .. it would be a riot for sure.
I would really have loved that .. thank you for thinking of me, I appreciate it !
