A Mystery

It always amazes me that hosta produce such sweet, delicate, little flowers.  I had to revise flower "parts" to explain what I find incredible. Otherwise I would call it "those long stick out bits ?"  Anther and filament, are part of the stamen ..phew !  Isn't it an inducing calling card for the pollinators to visit

I only have a small patch of Indian Pinks. It seems in my garden they spread very slowly, and I have to admit I forget they are there when I do Spring clean up .. so maybe it is me and not them ?

I love that vibrant "hello sailor" lipstick RED  !

This time of year there is a lot of GREEN .. but also some pockets of bright shiny objects that shout out.
I'm not usually a daisy fan but this little patch has been proving me wrong about their worth and I am glad they did. Especially on dull, gray days heavy with humidity when you feel wrung out, they perk me up !
I remember when Stella D'or was a big deal with reblooming. Now they have bred countless varieties. That yellow is a standard pick me up though, so I am glad I hung on to her .
This is a mystery to me. I planted Asiatic lillium "Landini" two years ago. I was expecting to see two different areas of them (from what I could remember planting .. yes I logged it in my book .. some where) but they didn't come up last year as they should have . I thought the bulbs had died some how. I have never had this happen to me like this before. But WOW ! whether they were late to the party or not, I am impressed with how tall and strong they are and the dreaded beetle doesn't seem to like them much .. perhaps that is because of a lack of fragrance ? Has anyone else had a delayed reaction from bulbs before like this ?

Those are just water spots from the sprinklers .. but they do look like polka dots right ?

I can't grow hostas but I've often been impressed by photos of the flowers. I love your polka-dotted lilies! Lilies are generally very short-lived here if they actually manage to bloom at all, although I've got one rather ordinary no-name unscented pink variety I received as a gift with purchase years ago that comes back every year. Last year, in a fit of pandemic-related boredom, I ordered several bulbs of "tree lilies" and, much to my surprise, they've grown and got buds. I check the buds almost every morning, anxiously waiting for them to bloom before our first deadly heatwave strikes...

Hello Joy,
Your Landini looks amazing. I would also like it to be in my garden. You write about magic. Yes, two years ago I planted 3 Martagon lily bulbs, but none sprouted. I assumed they were eaten by mice. But the last year Martagons grew up and blossomed beautifully. This year they are very high and there are 5 instead of 3. I'm waiting for flowers.
have a nice summer!

My garden is awash with yellow right now. Looking out the patio doors I see bright spots galore. All is beginning to simmer down though. The green on green time is about to begin. I really like that dark lily. The polka dots adds to its charm. Luckily I have never had a lily beetle in the garden. I hate to say that out loud because they will probably find their way here. I am ever hopeful I am wrong about that. I love hosta blooming season. The bumble bees and hummingbirds also like them.

I couldn't agree more re the loveliness of hosta flowers! I'm loving the Indian pinks, how very vibrant. I do love green in a garden, I find it so restful, yours is gorgeous whereas mine is a jungle. Those daisies are so pristine and perfect. Haha, loving the raindrop/polka dots on those delightful lilies.xxx

Hi Kris , yes I would have thought you couldn't grow hosta where you are .. just too hot and dry but the lilies are a surprise and that is a good thing right ? .. I haven't grown lily trees .. and frankly I thought the lily beetle would mow all of mine down and I would have to pull them out but so far not as bad as I thought .. it is nice to be surprised in a good way!

Nadezda what a nice surprise and maybe a bit of magic that those martagon survived and are flourishing ! .. I think that is very common for them not to appear the first year .. I only have the one out of the two that is doing well when it survives the dreaded BEETLE .. ugh !
I have a weak spot for martagons .. I am glad yours are doing well !

Hello Lisa girl ;-) You are so lucky not to deal with the beetle .. I have neem oil spray but I haven't been using it regularly so that is on me .. but Landini doesn't seem to attract it at all and that is a good thing ! I love how sweet hosta flowers are and I am waiting for Guacamole hosta to flower .. those have a scent that is amazing !

Hello there YOU :-) You have such shimmering living green Snowbird naming it a jungle is perfect because of all the life it has within it ! and yes green is restful and especially wonderful to Canadians that go through such a long and usually brutal winter. Yup the rain drop polka dot thing is a smile maker for me ! LOL

I always love that path along the side of your house. The Indian Pinks tend to come up pretty late, but once they bloom they are hard to ignore.

Hello Jason and thank you ! .. my neighbor was so sweet to let me garden on her side so I had the freedom to experiment a little (I still am ? LOL) I do love my little patch of Indian Pinks .. I hope they will push out a little further though one day !

That is such a lovely path - and I know what you mean about the daisies. I too have a patch of them that we grew from seed that was given to my daughter as part of a birthday goodie bag. We sowed them, just to see what would happen and they are on year 3 and going strong. I think I need more!

Those dark lilies are so cool. I wish lilies would stay in bloom longer. It’s funny, unlike most gardeners, I’m not into hostas, and only have one. I leave the flowers because hummingbirds and bees love them, but otherwise they make me yawn! Ha

Hi Robin ! ... Landini is the longest blooming lily I have had yet .. and it stays in such perfect form during that time, plus the lily beetle seems to ignore it so that is a huge bonus. I wasn't into hosta that much when I first started gardening but then I found them such a great foil for surrounding plants they really began to grow on me (pun almost intended) and funny enough I not into the flowers but I know how they feed the insects and hummers so I tolerate them until they are finished.

Haven't seen your garden for a while - it is looking lovely. Lots of green and some flowers to enjoy, the way nature intends it.

Thanks for dropping by Diana .. your hiking post was beautiful ! Such different plants and amazing landscapes .. almost like an alien planet ! I am lucky to have a lush garden this year with such drought problems else where .. the world seems to be on fire in so many places.
