Help with plant ID ?

I feel like an idiot ... which happens far more than I let on of course.
This episode of "garden DUH?" is especially driving me nuts.
Apparently this plant for which I have no idea what the blank it is  ... is driving me around the bend.
So ... if one of you wonderful gardeners could put me out of my misery and tell me what this plant is I will be forever grateful ... and yet totally embarrassed ? go figure eh ?
Here are some pictures of the beast (it is tall .. straight ..foliage  reminds me of veronicastrum but I know it isn't) ... BIG sigh !

It doesn't need staking right now ... but for the life of me I can not think of what it could be ..
There are three of them so I must have planted it deliberately but some how the height either was not correct in the description (which if course I don't have or I wouldn't be in this situation ? argh!)
It is "unfolding" what may be flower buds eventually from the top.

So .... if anyone of you know what this plant is ... put me out of my misery PLEASE !

Joy, it looks a little like my lythrum. Mine is a sterile variety but they are other varieties that reseed.

I think it is some type of aster.

The flower buds reminded me somewhat of Campanula but looking at the plant(s) as a whole then I decided it doesn't resemble any Campanula that I know of. I can see why it reminds you of Veronicastrum too. Very similar are growth habit.
Good luck in finding out what it is Joy.

Hello Eileen and thank you ! .. I am beginning to think you are close or even right .. but what ever happened it was a mislabeled plant because I wouldn't have bought it.
Now I will be watching to see what the flowers are like to have a positive ID .. I will be moving it for sure !

Hello Rod and thank you for stopping by with an opinion .. I appreciate it !

Angie girl .. so sorry your weather has been so wet .. makes for a rotten summer !
I think Eileen is on the right track about it being in the lythrum family ... I am hoping it is sterile if it is or it will have to be in the bin ... just have to wait and see.

Hi, I have some like this and it's an aster. Let it bloom and you'll see what it looks like. Bon dimanche!

Oh I have no idea. I am sure one of your knowledgeable friends will know. Yes it can stop raining anytime now. Haying is hard in the rain:) Hug B

Eileen, could be right, she's a very experienced gardener, but my guess is that it is a weed. I hope I'm wrong Joy!

Joy, it may be VERBASCUM, it's very similar.Mine are in buds now and when VERBASCUM is in bloom it's yellow and white.

Bonjour Martine ! Thank you for stopping by with your thought on it being an aster .. it could very well be one since I have combed through some of the net for TALL asters ! haha
I will certainly let it bloom to see what is going to happen : ) Thanks !

Grace girl hello there ... I hope the haying is going better but it is so HOT out there and the humidity dreadful .. I feel terrible for people that have to work outside .. especially the farming community. Make sure to look after yourself VERY well with this weather ... lots of water girl !!

Jennifer girl it perplexes me so much it is driving me a bit crazy ... I never thought an aster would grow that tall but wow! that suggestion could be correct ... and the thought of it being lythrum from Eileen could also be correct ... I have to wait for it to bloom to make sure .. fingers crossed I can do that !!

Nadezda girl ! I loved your post on delphinium ! all your pictures were so pretty !
I am pretty sure it is not verbascum because the foliage is not right for that plant .. but I appreciate your input very much ... stay tuned to see what this is ? LOL

I think it's a wild aster because I have the same plant in my garden. Be sure to show us pics when it blooms. If it is a wild aster then you will have A ZILLION seedlings next spring if you let it go to seed. But the pollinators will love it so just dead head it after it blooms.

Hi Tammy girl .. the two leading thoughts are as your's with the aster and with Eileen with the lythrum .. so I am thinking one of those two has to be it.
YES ! I will take pictures of it blooming so everyone can see what the mystery was ..
Then make the decision to bin it or keep it in another place in the garden ..
The zillion seeds is too scary to even think of though ! haha

My vote is with the aster crowd.

Are the leaves in a whorled pattern? They look like it in the pictures.

Hi Terry .. thanks for commenting on this plant .. yes the whorled pattern has me thinking the same thing .. in any case it is not staying .. but I am waiting for the flowers to open so we can all SEE !

My first thought was aster but Eileen may very well be right. As for putting you out of your misery, you'll have to take care of that yourself. I'm reminded of a little Dorothy Parker poem: "Razors pain you; Rivers are damp; Acids stain you; And drugs cause cramp. Guns aren’t lawful; Nooses give; Gas smells awful; You might as well live."

Peter you are VERY bad ! LOL
I am thinking as it unfurls it is going to be what Eileen thinks it is too .. but it hasn't unfolded all the way yet so I am waiting to take a good picture of it in full bloom to show everyone.
Enjoyed that garden tour with all the horse tail plants !

I'm writing this later. Has the mystery plant bloomed yet? Have the blooms revealed what it is? I'm very curious. Whatever it is, it looks like a winner. Please update us. Thank you!

Hi Gracie !
It has not bloomed yet , and I actually had to move it so I don't know if the transplant shock will stop the flowers from progressing or not .. I had to move it because it was SO in the way where it was .. I am thinking that Eileen is right about it being lythrum .. the structure of the flowers look like they would bloom as that type of flower head ... it is really TALL !
I will keep track of it and blog pictures of it if it does bloom, fingers crossed !
